This spring I installed what I take to be the final elements of the garden—viewing stones on daiza. This was a natural evolution of the last stage of my "Postmodernist" viewing stones, in particular those on multiple and geometric wood planes. (See "Recent Work" in the suiseki section of this site.) Having completed the "Feb.- March set" of viewing stones, I realized that a select few of earlier pieces, especially larger ones could be placed upon rectangular bases or stands; e.g., in the garden, facing outward from the house, the single Murphys stone at the left is done in this manner—the stone's daiza was done 10-15 years ago; the stone without its daiza has been in the present garden for at least the last two years; its white base is new and the original daiza has been refinished to withstand the exterior weather. The most prominent of the three viewing stone pieces in the garden is the set of three stones near the center of the garden; this piece was specifically designed and created for the garden; the stones are local. Taking the concept of the geometrical, rectangular daiza to its next logical step, the two-stone piece at the right is set in a concrete daiza. This piece resides in the descending arch, front to back consisting of the dawn redwood, the black pine, the two-stone piece and the large boxwood. In itself, this piece is too strong for the garden; however, given its context and location, I think that it may work; but only time will tell.

These three viewing stone pieces, consisting of a single, double and triple stones are each set on a distinct daiza style. Not only are these pieces consistent with the Postmodernist nature of the garden, but they go some distance in creating, thus defining this garden genre.
